A Perilous Undertaking might be my favorite story in the Veronica Speedwell series! Sometimes the second book in a series suffers from the sophomore slump, but that does not happen with this one.

Kristen Callihan baked up a treat with Make It Sweet! Make It Sweet was the perfect feel-good romance novel with complex characters, a great romantic build up and not too much drama.

First off, I love, love, love the entire Veronica Speedwell series, so this is probably going to be a long review.

I randomly discovered this series in 2018 when trying to find something one night to read, and it was a suggestion on Overdrive from a recent book I had read. I added it to my TBR list based on the synopsis, but little did I know how good the story it contained would be.

Since my first read of this book in 2018, I’ve read the entire series 4 times through and will likely continue to reread it. On each reread, my appreciation for these stories and characters grows so much.

Allow me to reintroduce myself

Well, it’s been over 5 years since I’ve written a blog post here. And to be honest, I never thought I would be back. Back when I stopped blogging, it became too much to handle as I was transitioning to working a full-time communications job.

However, while doing a readalong (#MeettheBridgertons hosted by the lovely Teresa at Romance Reader) to prepare for Bridgerton’s premiere on Netflix, I realized how much I missed the community that came with blogging. I missed talking books with people who were as passionate about the stories as I was. I missed hearing other people’s recommendation. I missed discovering new authors to read. I just missed it all.

And so here I am, nearly 5 years since I last wrote a post, ready to relaunch and reintroduce myself.

As you can imagine, quite a bit has changed since I initially launched this blog in 2010. For one, my reading tastes have evolved. Back when I first started blogging, I primarily read YA fiction. Now, I’d say I primarily read romance novels. I love historical romances and hate how much the genre is looked down upon by so many people. Romance brings joy and, honestly, I’d rather read what I enjoy than something that is deemed “high-brow” or “literature” (not that there’s anything wrong with enjoying those genres!) Reading is reading and people should read what they enjoy!

It’s hard for me to pick a favorite book or author, as it constantly shifts and many stories hold a special place in my heart, but I’m a huge fan of Deanna Raybourn, Tessa Dare, Sarah MacLean and Sarah J. Maas to name a few. To learn more about my favorite genres, tropes, authors and series, check out my updated ‘Review Policy’ page as I have a much more in-depth breakdown there.

I’m excited to be back here on my blog and look forward to connecting with you here, as well as on Twitter at @danijohns and on Instagram @overflowingshelf
